Summary
Linota collects only the data needed to provide your account and learning features. Text is saved only when you choose it; the extension does not read pages in the background. If you use Pro Language Radar, a page is checked on your device only after you choose Scan this page. We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising.
Who is responsible
The controller is the Linota operator. You can reach the controller at help@linota.de.
Data-protection contact: privacy@linota.de.
Data we process
- Account and profile data: email address, optional display name and username, authentication/session information, and account preferences.
- Learning data: text you deliberately save or type, optional page context, source URL when you choose to retain it, study notes, review cards, practice events, writing responses and reports, and learned or deleted states.
- Language Radar data: when you explicitly scan a page, matching saved-item identifiers, the website domain, match count, time, and whether you marked a word as recognized. The page text, page title, full URL, visits with no matches, and unmatched words are not uploaded or stored.
- Connection and security data: connected-browser records, IP- and request-level security signals, rate-limit and abuse-prevention events, and service logs.
- Plan and payment data: selected plan, analysis-credit usage, payment status, billing identifiers, and transaction records. Payment details such as full card numbers are handled by our payment provider and are not stored by Linota.
Why we use it
- To create and secure your account, connect the extension, store your learning data, and run Practice (performance of our agreement with you).
- To show where analyzed words appear after you request a Language Radar scan and record the recognition progress you choose to share (performance of our agreement with you).
- To create a study note, writing task, or writing report after you request it, avoid duplicate processing, and enforce plan and credit limits (performance of our agreement with you).
- To protect the service, enforce limits, investigate abuse, and improve reliability (our legitimate interests in a safe, sustainable service).
- To meet legal duties where they apply.
- If a future feature asks for consent, such as optional analytics, we will explain the choice and how to withdraw that consent.
AI and service providers
When you choose Create note, the selected German text and the context needed to explain it are sent to our AI provider, OpenAI, to create the requested study note. When you create a Pro writing task, a short list of your study words is sent to create the task. Your written response is sent only when you ask for a report. Our account, application, and database services use Supabase. These providers process data under contracts and our instructions.
We may keep a minimized, standard language entry in a shared knowledge cache so the same word or expression does not require repeated AI processing. This cache is designed to stay separate from your account, contact information, and website context. Do not submit sensitive personal data, confidential material, or text about other people that you are not allowed to share.
Providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where this occurs, we will use the transfer safeguards required for the service and maintain the relevant provider documentation.
Storage, cookies, and retention
We use essential authentication/session storage to keep you signed in and local browser storage to remember your theme. A connected extension also keeps a short-lived local copy of your Radar word list so it does not need to download it on every scan. We do not currently use advertising cookies or optional analytics cookies. If that changes, we will ask for consent before placing optional cookies.
Your account and learning data remain available until you delete them, change a retention setting, or we must remove them for security or legal reasons. Deleting a saved item also removes its Language Radar encounters. Your retention setting controls eligible saved learning data; account deletion removes account-linked data from the product, subject to short-lived backups, fraud/security records, and legal retention duties. A de-identified shared language-cache entry may remain if it is no longer linked to your account or source context.
Your choices and rights
You can update your profile, website-context preference, retention setting, connected browsers, or delete your account from Profile and settings. Depending on applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing based on legitimate interests. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority. Contact the controller using the details above for help with a request.
Linota is not directed to children. If you are below the age at which you can consent to online services in your country, use it only with a parent or guardian where required.
Changes to this notice
We will update this notice when our data processing changes in a material way. If consent is required for a new feature, such as optional analytics, we will ask before enabling it. The current version was last updated 12 August 2026.
